Problems networking XP pro and Vista home premium!

Hi All,

I have a XP pro loaded on my PC and a Laptop with Vista Home Premium on it. I moved house recently and before i moved i had the network set up fine and could view the other computers documents from each PC.

Since moving i have set up the network again, i didnt have the internet for a few days but wanted to connect them up as i needed to transfer some files. I did this in exactly the same way and set up the home network on the XP pc again (MS HOME) and when i click on view workgroup computers it says that i do not have permission to view it. On the Vista laptop i can see the XP pc on the network but it comes up with an error code 0x80070035 and says the path is not available.

I just dont know what to do, ive been pissing around with it for days and cant figure a solution out.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Re: Problems networking XP pro and Vista home premium!

You could go through johnwill's standard diagnostic tests (see many, many other threads on these networking forums), and post the results, but, as you had a working connection before you moved, and seem to have a basic connection now, that may not be the quickest way to a diagnosis.

First, some questions. Are your connections wired or wireless? I'm guessing wired, because most people who have wireless mention this. Can you get an internet connection through the router? In that case, we are indeed most likely dealing with a file sharing/ permissions issue. Can you see the XP computer from the Vista machine? If you can, then the problem is probably in the Vista networking settings. If the answer to the last 2 questions is 'yes', you may be interested in my recent experience ( this thread, which also has useful input from johnwill).

Hope this helps.

David

Re: Problems networking XP pro and Vista home premium!

Hi, thanks for your reply's, sorry it has been a while i have been very busy. The connection from the router to the XP machine is wired, but the laptop runs on wireless. I can get an internet connection on both machines, and can see the XP machine on the laptop but it comes up with an error code 0x80070035 and says the path is not available. I have read your thread and password protected sharing was on, i turned it off and still no joy.

Any other ideas as to what the problem could be??

Many Thanks

Re: Problems networking XP pro and Vista home premium!

I had another little play this afternoon. I renamed the network and ran the setup wizard on the XP machine again and restarted. I changed the vista laptop to the same workgroup and restarted. Now the XP machine can see the vista laptop's files but when i go on the network on the vista laptop the XP machine doesnt come up. I have a link to the shared drive of the XP machine on the Vista laptop's desktop, and when clicked on it says that the path cannot be found

any ideas??

Cheers

That's typically a firewall issue, have you disabled ALL firewalls as a test?

Re: Problems networking XP pro and Vista home premium!

What do you mean by "tried to disable" the firewalls? You should know if you have, because the machines will immediately present unmissable security warnings, which you should ignore.

What security/anti-vrus program are you running? I'd like to be sure it doesn't have a built in firewall.

Can the computers ping each other? If you don't know what that is, for detailed instructions, look in another thread on this forum where johnwill asks a user to open a command prompt and run ping.

You probably don't know the IP address of your computers; to find this out run the command "ipconfig /all" from the command prompt on each computer. Then if, say, the address for the laptop is 192.168.0.3, run "ping 192.168.0.3" at a command prompt on the desktop. There will be 4 tries; on a LAN, there should be a near-instantaneous response on all of them.

If that works, try pinging the computers by name: if the network name of the laptop is LAPTOP, you'd run "ping LAPTOP" from the desktop. If those work, the problem will be with the Windows networking or firewall settings. You should run the standard diagnostic tests that johnwill advises, and post the results for each computer.

I hope that this does not seem like too much of a hassle.
