Vista won't show the other computers in the workgroup

hey, i was trying to make a home network so i could share our printer, which i successfully did with my xp computer which connects wirelessly(call it xp2), but my laptop which is a windows vista home premium( also connects wirelessly), won't show the other computers on that network, i downloaded the lltd responder for my xp computer(call it xp1), the one that physically connects to to both the wireless router and and the printer, but vista still won't show xp1, if on vista though i view the full network map, it does come up on that and i can see the ip address and mac address, i can by the way see the vista computer through xp1 in the workgroup. if i try and access it though it tells me i don't have permission even though file sharing and all that stuff is switched on.
any suggestions? just ask me if you need any more info
the wireless router is the netgear wpnt834 rangemax 240 wireless router
cheers,

Re: Vista won't show the other computers in the workgroup

Make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup. Sometimes MSHOME is used and sometimes WORKGROUP is used make sure all the computers stay consistent. To check this on xp and vista right click on my computer, click properties, then the computer name tab and click on a button that says change. Should be self explanatory from there.

Re: Vista won't show the other computers in the workgroup

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : FIXANON.REG
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be FIXANON.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result.

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Reboot the computer.

Re: Vista won't show the other computers in the workgroup

hey thanks for the reply,
To p3ngu yes i have checked and retyped it just in case but no they are the same. to johnwill, i did that but everything still seems the same, the other computer still won't show up in the network and i still can see but not access the vista laptop from xp1.
I just want to make sure i got everything right though,i saved a file in notepad called FIXANON.REG saved as type all files and the encoding was ANSI, after i saved it, i copied in "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000" without the inverted commas, then saved it and opened it and then warned me that adding information can unintentionally change or delete values ...... i clicked yes, then i restarted.
no change. this was all supposed to be done to the vista laptop correct?

Inverted commas? You should use that file EXACTLY as posted.

THis was added to the machine with the shared files.

Re: Vista won't show the other computers in the workgroup

Let's see this for each of the machines.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Vista won't show the other computers in the workgroup

Note that two of the computers appear to think they're the master browser, XP2 and Vista. This is most likely due to firewall configuration issues. Disable ALL the firewalls and see if you can ping all around by computer name. You need to get this to work before networking is going to work.
