Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving trouble

Ok, I will give an overview of the situation. I have a laptop (Vista), desktop (XP), and my brothers laptop (XP) on our network. They are all in the MSHOME workgroup. The problem I am having is my desktop can't see the other two computers.
  • My vista laptop can see my desktop, but gives me an error when I try to access it about an invalid name
  • I can ping the IP of all the computers, and can ping the name of my brothers laptop from my laptop, but can't ping my desktop by name
  • Can ping IPs of all computers from my desktop but none by name
  • I have made sure all the proper services are enabled, that file sharing is enable under network settings, have made sure NetBios is working (although I dont know if these newer comps need it)
  • One other thing that is wierd, I have an xbox that runs XBMC and had previously shared my desktop to it, and if I go to those shares, I get an error at first, but can continue and browse them and watch videos. Also my xbox can see my desktop in the workgroup and browse it
  • If I go to workgroup computers on my desktop it's unreliable, sometimes it shows itself, sometimes nothing, but recently my laptop (but not my brothers) showed up, but I get an error if I try to access it.
  • I used to use Norton, but have uninstalled it since it wasn't effective and have since started using AVG free on both computers and leaving my router for a firewall.
  • Windows firewall is disable on my laptop and desktop

Ok, so that is pretty much all the info I think. I have had this working fine before so I don't know what happened. I recently reformatted my desktop, partially because it was needed and partially because I thought I could get sharing working again, but that didn't work. I'm not sure what else to try and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Yeah I have seen that post before. I have tried everything listed there. I used to use Norton Internet Security, but have uninstalled it since it wasn't effective and have since started using AVG free on both computers and leaving my router for a firewall and Windows firewall is disable on my laptop and desktop.

This is the ipconfig from my desktop (the computer that seems to be causing the trouble):

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Let's see this for BOTH of the computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

You seem to have the right mix, but the failure to ping by name is the sticking point here. That still suggests some firewall component blocking the access.

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Nothing jumps out at me.

Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking, let's see if that helps.

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

In safe mode w/networking I can ping my desktop by IP and by name from my laptop, but still can't access it's files. It sees it in the network, but instead of invalid name it says "Windows confirmed that DESTROYER is currently online, but is not responding to connection attempts at this time". Then it says it's most likley a firewall blocking file and printer sharing (SMB). But again, I'm not using a software firewall, just my router. But I configured port forwarding to allow the suggested port, TCP 445, with no success.

But even in safemode I still can't ping my laptop by name, but still can by IP.

Thank you

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Let's reset the stack on each of these.

For Vista...

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

For XP...

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Ok, I reset that on both computers and restarted both computers and it is still behaving the same way. Will windows firewall have an effect on this? I have it turned off but it seems like eventually it turns itself back on.

Thanks

The router firewall has no effect on the local network, and you should NOT forward any file/print sharing ports on the router's firewall!

I'm at a loss, it seems that a networking service may not be running due to the "not responding" error, but you say all the services are running on both machines?

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Sorry it's been a while since I have replied, I've been pretty busy. Yeah all the services that you posted are started and on automatic. Is there anything else I can check? Or is there a way I can just start clean and try sharing again? And router settting shouldn't have any effect, right?

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

Unless this is a high-end router with firewall or VLAN capabilities on the switch section, the switch should be transparent to the traffic.

BTW, do NOT port forward any file sharing ports in the router, you're opening up your computer to direct connections to the Internet, not a good idea!

This sounds like a firewall of some sort.

Please post a HijackThis 2.00.2 Log here.

Re: Problem with file sharing. Have tried everything. One computer still giving troub

It's just a Linksys WRT54G but I do have Tomato firmware on there instead of the normal stuff. I'm not forwarding any file sharing ports. I have already posted a Hijackthis log above, but since then I have removed AVG Free (it was causing random BSD's for some reason) and started using Avira AntiVir. So here is what my log looks like now:

I'm at a loss. I don't see anything obvious, but clearly something is blocking the pings...

For each computer, let's see this.

Start, Run, NOTEPAD c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS.

Select all and copy and paste to a message here.
