[SOLVED] Me too - cannot share between Vista and XP

My problem sounds similar to Maniak29. I have two XP machines (one each SP2 and SP3) successfully sharing files with a recently added Vista machine.

Added a third XP (SP3) machine today..it sees the Vista machine in the workgroup however cannot access it (get the "\\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc message).

Going the other direction everything works fine: the Vista machine sees the third XP machine and opens shared folders on it no problem.

Both the Vista and third XP machine see and share folders with the original two XP machines

Vista Machine Facts:
-Firewall disabled
-Network discovery, file sharing and public folder sharing ON
-Location type = Private
-Workgroup name = WORKGROUP
-All XP machines respond when pinged from the Vista machine

XP Machine Facts:
- Firewall disabled (as far as I can tell)
- File and printer sharing enabled
- Workgroup name = WORKGROUP
- Other XP machines respond when pinged, Vista machine doesn't.

Per the request to Maniak29, here are the nbtstat and ipconfig outputs:

Re: Me too - cannot share between Vista and XP

If the Vista machine can't be pinged by name, there's your problem. That's almost always a firewall component blocking access.

Re: Me too - cannot share between Vista and XP

Thanks. Firewalls are turned off however I understand some remnants of a firewall may still prevent communication. So the question is which machine is the culprit? Insofar as other XP machines can ping the Vista machine, I suppose the firewall issue is on the one XP machine that cannot ping the vista. Yes, No?

Re: Me too - cannot share between Vista and XP

Ignore previous post...my mistake, you were right. Norton was running on the vista machine. Changed the personal firewall settings to trust the LAN (allow Windows File Sharing) and everything worked.

Re: Me too - cannot share between Vista and XP

Glad you figured it out.

Remember: Failure to ping, think firewall!
