Cannot share between Vista and XP
My friend and I have been trying for hours to get file sharing to work between my XP machine and my Vista machine, with no luck.
We have disabled all firewalls, created identical accounts on each, made sure they were set to the same network name, tried with and without passwords, made sure more than once that file sharing is on, set permissions for "everyone" in individual folders that I want to share... all to almost no avail. The XP machine can see the Vista machine, but says that access is denied. The vista machine can see the XP machine, but only sees it as a media center. As in when I try to open it, it opens windows media player. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any ideas. |

Re: Cannot share between Vista and XP
First off, can you ping each way by computer name?
Let's see this for each of the computers. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key: Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands. NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Cannot share between Vista and XP
--To add on a bit, I will say that my mother's machine shows up fine. I can see that but I have yet to enable sharing on her machine. Also, the XP machine has net access as well, but just no sharing.
