P2P

We believe that the main purpose of P2P programs is to illegally download and use copyrighted material of whatever description. We further understand that there may be legal uses for P2P, but as we are not able to assess a user's intent when he/ she asks for help, we do not support P2P software and we will not assist any user in this regard. This includes but is not limited to Bearshare, Kazaa and many others.

I remember seeing a post you took down with someone asking how to get more torrent speed. But, then I saw this forum and it says "illegal P2P is not tolerated" which implies your allowed to talk about P2P as long as you aren't downloading anything illegal. You should change the forum description to reflect this, it's pretty misleading.

Re: This forum needs a a rules sticky post

peterhuang913 would not have closed or removed any threads, but a moderator or manager would have.
i closed your question on port forwarding because we do not help P2P software requests. in the rules it states that we believe the main use of P2P software is for illicit purposes and while it's acknowledged it can be used for legal purposes we have no way of knowing that.
so any help to you could inadvertently help some one with an illegal download.

I'm just a TSF noob, I can't close people's threads. I believe the file and app sharing is for the Windows network, if I not wrong.

We're pretty much hard over on discussing P2P issues of any sort here. While I recognize that P2P is sometimes used for legal purposes, the vast majority of uses are for illegal downloads. Note that the rules don't specify "it's OK if you're doing legal downloads". Obviously, it's impossible to determine what's really going on, so we that topic is just off-topic here.

Re: This forum needs a a rules sticky post

I understand the point about why you don't allow P2P file sharing, I'm just saying that you should say so in the forum description, as it's quite confusing and makes you think that you can share files as long as you're not sharing illegal ones.

Instead it should say P2P file sharing is not allowed, rather than "illegal P2P is not tolerated" which makes you think you can discuss legal P2P

When I go to the Rules link, this is what I see. It seems crystal clear to me, what part is confusing?

Re: This forum needs a a rules sticky post

Nah it was a screen shot but it turned out very bad, alot smaller than it was meant to be.

I will try and explain what he means, on the home page when you go down to the networking forum and you look at File and Application Sharing, and you see the description below I think that is what he is referring too

Re: This forum needs a a rules sticky post

I know where you're talking about, but we'll have to have Jason update that if there's a clearer description. I'd consider just saying that P2P applications are not supported, period.

I agree I think that would be a better way of putting it.

Re: This forum needs a a rules sticky post

I'm going to see if we can clarify the description for the folks that don't read the official rules.

Re: This forum needs a a rules sticky post

only now it appears to run into
Quote:
Protecting you against unwanted people and programs
perhaps shorten it to
Quote:
(P2P is not supported)
if you do add "of any kind" it will probably take it too close the security and firewalls description again.

OK, that's the difference, I don't use the sidebar, and my display is 1280 across.
