Very few programs are able to access net
Hey all,
First post, so please excuse if you feel this may be in the wrong section or whatever. I've been having a strange problem lately; even if I disable all firewalls and internet security settings, the only programs able to use the network are Firefox and Pidgin. Windows Update also works just fine. Trend Internet Security is sometimes able to update, but aside from those programs, no other programs are able to access the internet (iTunes, Internet Explorer, Google Earth, WoW...you name it, it won't get online). I'm running Vista Home Premium w/ SP1 (which may or may not be the problem hehe), and as I said before, I still have this problem even with no firewall and all internet security settings turned off (which I obviously don't like to do, I just tried it to see if it would fix anything). Any assistance anyone could offer short of wiping my hard drive and starting over would be much appreciated! |

Re: Very few programs are able to access net
Try resetting IE to defaults, since most of those applications mentioned share their settings with IE.
Reset Internet Explorer 7 Settings

Re: Very few programs are able to access net
Start, Run, NOTEPAD c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS.
Select all and copy and paste to a message here. Let's see this as well. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Very few programs are able to access net
Well, we can give a stack reset a try.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista. Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the machine.

Re: Very few programs are able to access net
Hmm... This sure sounds like either IE has been corrupted or a firewall is still blocking you.

Re: Very few programs are able to access net
Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking, see if the symptoms still exist.

Re: Very few programs are able to access net
Well, this screams firewall to me, hard to say what's going on here.
Please post a HijackThis 2.00.2 Log here.

It appears that the Trend firewall may still be active.
