Files on Web-hosting reference by P2P site!?
I have a web-hosting I use to host files that I generally use for private use. I don't intend on having the files distributed to random people. The purpose of the files is for me to be able to access them through another system at a different location when I don't have access to my external drives. I generally use the files for troubleshooting purposes.
I currently have the CHMOD for my web-hosting set so anyone can view the web directory and grab the files from there. I forgot one of my sub-directories so I did a google search on a URL with a similar syntax to find my sub-directories files advertised through a pirating site. I have some software uploaded then I have full-rights to yet they are listed in a pirating site for ANYONE to access. Not only is this an invasion to my privacy but it also eat's up my allowed bandwith. If I set the CHMOD to prompt for a password on folder access (Assuming this is possible) will the files no longer be accessible through the pirating site? Thank you for any and all help. |

Re: Files on Web-hosting reference by P2P site!?
Making those files non-public and requiring a password for the directory listing should take care of things.

Alright, thank you for your help.
Just out of curiosity, is it legal for a site/company to offer links to download your private files like that? Not only is it enfringing upon my rights but also my bandwith... |

Re: Files on Web-hosting reference by P2P site!?
Honestly, I think this would be a legal grey area, since your 'private' files, weren't technically private since you were hosting them publicly on the internet. I don't think it would count under any hacking or theft, but you could definitely get them on copyright infringement, since even hotlinking to a copyrighted image is grounds for a civil suit.
If they continue to host these files against your will, you can send them a DMCA takedown notice, and if this is losing you money, you could potentially sue them.
