Sharing vids from Vista Desktop PC to WinXPMCE2005 PC
Hi all
I'll give you a quick rundown on what I have for my home LAN to hopefully make it easier for you to assist me here. I have my desktop PC with Windows Vista Ultimate (pc name is "tgf"), my girlfriends desktop PC (running winXP SP2), and my media centre PC running WinXP MCE2005 (pc name is "mediapc"). I have a stack of videos on "tgf" that I want to share so I can watch them on my plasma TV which is hooked up to "mediapc". I have only just installed Vista on "tgf" so I'm still figuring it all out. As best as I can figure, I've shared the folders I want to share on "tgf"'s hard-drive but "mediapc" isnt detecting them when I run the WinXP Media Centre 2005 software like when I had winXP SP2 installed on "tgf". All the PC's on my home LAN are by default on the same workgroup called "WORKGROUP". With regards to IP addresses, they are automatically assigned by the switch/modem/router and are in the range 192.168.0.** Just now I have logged onto another PC on my home lan creatively called "sparepc", went START->Run and then typed "\\tgf" and it asked me for a username and password so I entered the username of "Guest" with no password and it connected ok (the "guest" account is enabled on "tgf") and I could see all the shares on "tgf". If it helps, my network settings on "tgf" look like this: http://www.cubicleofdoom.com/sam/Networksharing.jpg I have added the group "everyone" (as well as the "guest" account) as a co-owner for permissions on all the folders I want to share on "tgf". Very simply put, I want to be able to navigate to any folder I have shared on my vista PC, from any other PC on the network, and not have to enter a username or password at all and the main focus is being able to get the Media Centre software on "mediapc" to detect shared folders on the network so I can watch vids on my plasma. Is there a way to create a shortcut to a PC on your home network which will automatically enter a username for you just by clicking on the shortcut itself? Cheers, Sam Last edited by tgf : 05-18-2008 at 01:26 AM. |

Create a user account on the machine with the files to share with the same name/password as is used to login to the connecting machine.

Create a password on mediapc. Vista's default is to not enable file sharing on accounts with no password.
