[SOLVED] network file access lost
I have a home network operating on WIN XP SP2. A desktop PC is cabled to a wireless router/modem for internet access and wireless support. There is a wireless laptops connected to the network. This setup has been working very well for the past several years. The PCs were in a peer to peer configuration, within a workgroup.
A couple of weeks ago the laptop was re-configured to get access to a domain at my workplace. COnsequently I was able to connect to files on my work network. However, I lost access to files on the desktop; files that I normally could pull up on the laptop (wireless), edit and save back on hte desktop. Now I have only internet access at home and cannot see the desktop at all. I have had the work domain removed from the laptop in an effort to restore access to the home desktop, but still have no access. I can ping to the dekstop, and from the dekstop can ping to the laptop. But neither machine can see files on the other. File sharing is enabled on both machines. Any suggestions on what I can do to restore the original condition? rdr Last edited by rdr95 : 03-28-2008 at 05:16 PM. Reason: more info |

Re: network file access lost
Further:
the command net view on the laptop shows both the laptop and desktop as being on the network with the correct names. On the desktop, net view shows only the desktop as being part of the network. Both machines have internet access through the same router/modem. On the laptop, I can ping by computername to the laptop but cannot ping by name to the desktop. On the desktop, I can ping by name to the desktop, but not the laptop. From either PC, I can ping to both computers by IP. rdr |

Re: network file access lost
Let's see this for each machine.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following two commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key: NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: network file access lost
Here's what finally did the trick:
regedit: HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters -delete DhcpNodeType Then restart XP. After doing this, I was able to map to network drives and open files. Thanks to all for your ideas. rdr |
