Cannot download any applications - Help!

Every time I try to download any application file (.exe), it won't work. The tab on Firefox will display the link to the file in the tab bar (e.g. http://www.pctools.com/mirror/rminstall.... and a completely blank web page. Internet Explorer is the same. I have Free Download Manager, but as soon as I use that, it will stop the download and say "Access Denied. Invalid User Name or Password", when I'm not connecting through a proxy and none of the sites require a password to download the files. I have run both AdAware and Spybot, but it still won't download. I re-formatted my hard drive and it worked, but then I installed Download Accelerator Plus, which asked me for a user name and password to download Java Development Kit (which doesn't need a user name and password). I uninstalled Download Accelerator Plus, but now I'm stuck with the same problem as before.

None of the files have been removed as far as I know, as when I download files which I know are there, it still won't work. Zip files work perfectly well, it's just install files ending in .exe that don't work.

Can anyone here please help me? I've posted this on Yahoo! Answers and Tech Support Guy forum, and no-one there has been able to help me at all.

I'd be looking at your security software, either a firewall, virus scanner, or spyware scanner.

I have turned Norton AntiVirus off (I'm planning to replace it soon with McAFee) and I still have the problem. I can't even download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player to watch YouTube videos.

Have you checked your firewall and AV configuration to make sure they're not blocking them?

Try turning off windows firewalls or portforward in your firewall the correct ports.
