Home Network Issues[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

I know are many posts about basic home with XP but I can't find any posts that match my config so here goes.

All I'm trying to do is share a Lexmark printer on the network - like I used to be able to years ago.

The Master is a Dell 8200 running XP Pro with SP2 connected to a Motorola VT2442 cable router.

I have a Dell 8400 running XP Home SP2 and a PS3 connected to a Netgear WGT624 router which is connected to the VT2442.

I also have a IBM Thinkpad t41 running XP Pro SP1 and a AMD desktop running XP Pro SP2 connected to a Linksys WRT54GS.

I'm currently in the process of redoing all the home network settings and starting over again.

All machines with exception to the AMD run Bitdefender.

I'm looking for any help possible. Trouble shooting, starting over etc. all help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Home Network Issues

What have you tried so far and where are you getting stuck? Have you attempted to set up the network yet, and can the PCs see each other?

Re: Home Network Issues

On the dell 8200 where the lexmark is attached via a USB port. I ran the Network Setup wizard and saved the results in a thumbdrive.

I took that and ran that on the 8400.

The 8400 can't see the 8200 and vice versa. It's like the computers don't get past the routers.

Internet access on all boxes works well.

Thanks for replying. I appreciate the help.

Re: Home Network Issues

Can you disable all of the firewalls to troubleshoot? Also, are they on the same router or do you have 2 different routers in the home?

The networking wizard is a piece of junk. To share the printer see this article to set up the printer manually.

Let me know if you have any luck with that, otherwise post back and we'll do some troubleshooting.

Re: Home Network Issues

I disabled all the XP firewalls.

The routers all have default configurations.

The Motorola is the Master router with the Netgear and Linksys running as slaves.

I'll double check Bitdefender to make sure there isn't a setting I'm missing.

I'll try the doc you mentioned right now.

Thanks!

Re: Home Network Issues[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Hey BMR,

I tried the suggestions in the link you provided. I get the same results - when I try to select the printer it doesn't show up in the network.

Today I'm going to disconnect the extra routers and see if that makes a difference.

The Dell8400 sits behind a Netgear router - I tried to shut the firewall down on the Netgear in effect making it function as a hub but I don't believe it is that simple.

Thanks again for your help. I'll reply back later with results.

Re: Home Network Issues[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

For each computer, do this.

Disable ALL firewalls.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt for the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

I'd like to see this for each computer as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Home Network Issues[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Hey John,

I also eliminated the other 2 routers on my network. So the only router is the Motorola 2442.

Sure enough the PC that has the printer attached - Dell 8200 - cannot be pinged by the Dell 8400 and the Thinkpad.

I'll post the IPCONFIG and NBTSTAT data later today.

Thanks.

At this point I suspect the Motorola router is the culprit but have no solid proof.

I'll be back.

I believe I have the Motorola Firewall turned off and I have Bitdefenders Firewall disabled on all three machines.

I can Ping the Dell 8400 from the Thinkpad and vice versa.

The 8400 and Thinkpad both timeout when pinging the 8200.

Re: Home Network Issues[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Failure to ping is almost always a firewall issue. I'd be looking for other firewall components on the systems. Can you ping any of them from the others?

Re: Home Network Issues[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Weird - I can now Ping the 8200 from the 8400. But the 8400 can't ping the Thinkpad which I previously could.

Re: Home Network Issues[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Well, time to look at the Thinkpad and see what firewall is blocking the pings.
