Simple questions about TTF file downloads

I download free fonts from reputable sources, like the designers who create and share them. I have a few questions you may be able to answer.

When I download a font and unzip it into an extra font folder I created (so as not to slow up Windows) it will tell me
"This folder already contains a file named "BlahBlahBlah".
Would you like to replace the existing file "blahblahblah" modified: January 25, 2002 6:40:32 PM
with this one
"BlahBlahBlah" modified: March 18, 1999 6:40:32 PM

[Yes] [Yes to All] [No] [Cancel]

My questions are:
(1) When I choose "Yes", why doesn't the file that was originally in there go to my Trashcan? Where does it go? I just want to get rid of the extra Kbs whenever I can, ya know?

(2) Why do the (supposedly) same files have different Kbs at times? Sometimes it's only a few kilobytes, but sometimes it's like 20 or more Kbs larger or smaller! (I scan all downloads with Avast BTW)

(3) Sometimes they have different icons. Like one will have the same exact name and it is an open type font and the other is a true-type font. How can I change the name of one of the fonts without jeopardizing the integrity of it so both types can go in the same folder?

(4) What is a read-only type of file and what does it mean as far as usage? Will it still work? If not, can I do something to the properties of it to make it work without damaging it?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
