Skype and Bandwith ?

I just set up a network and am contemplating whether I should share it with my very close neighbors.

I have a high bandwidth dsl connection but am very anal about my bandwidth.

One of the neighbors uses Skype.

Should I be concerned?

thanks

the reality is, you could be violating your terms of use by sharing your internet connection with a neighbor. Dont be surprised if it gets turned off. also you better be able to trust your neighbors because you will be the one going to jail if theres any illegal activity.

skype will use bandwidth, usually its not noticeable if just using voice but if using video then there could be some problems.

Nope, wrong.
I told my isp that I would be sharing it with them and they said no problem. They even wanted to set up the network for me.

I do not think so.

We were networking with a satellite connection before that and hughes net was ok with that.

And how in the world would they enforce it? If you do not secure your router then anyone can use the connection.

You pay for bandwidth not # of users.

You are right, its tough to enforced. So it makes me wonder...

as I said, it is very unusual for neighbors to legally share an internet connection. The majority of cases its one payment per household not for the whole neighborhood. However, sharing between neighbors is still very risky for the account holder since they are responsible for all activity on that account.

However since this is getting away from your original question, this is my last post on this.

I suggest your neighbor get his own connection.

Re: Skype and Bandwith ?

As long as neighbor accesses the internet through -his- network, it's legally NOT sharing the connection, it becomes a simple case of a network user using the internet connection.

If he uses skype, shouldn't he already have internet?

I would be concerned simply because you have no control over his usage.
If I were to allow him to use the connection, I would split the bill.

Ken.

exactly, I called my isp and they have no problem with me sharing through my network.

They had an unreliable wify connection and have no landline so they cannot get dsl. (they do not offer it w/out existing phone line here)

they are friends of over 20 years. I have them all MAC filtered through my router. They are never home and hardly use the connection.

They are paying for it and I keep it working. So I get a 6 Mbs connection for free that they rarely use.

When they do use it it is at night. I only rely on it from 4:30am-1pm to daytrade, they are either sleeping or at work.

They hardly use the skype and if so it is at night. and they turned it off from start up. They only use it to talk to some mutual friends in Ireland very infrequently.

Other than that they do not download movies or music.

6Mbs is more than enough anyways.

thanks for all the off-topic replys!
