Network help needed to share files/folders..

Hi all..

i've just set up my neighbours new laptop for her (Vista home premium). All has gone well, managed to set up the wireless network to her desktop (XP HE) and have sorted the internet connection out without a fuss. However, i'm having some problems on the laptop when I try accessing shared network folders which are stored on the desktop...I keep getting access denied/permission errors.

I've checked all the permissions of the shared folders in Safe Mode and 'network' has access...coincidently, the files and folders on the desktop can be accessed from the laptop without a problem in Safe Mode which made me think that perhaps the firewall was causing the problems in normal mode. I've checked all the firewall settings and all seem ok to allow file/folder sharing...have even completely disabled the firewall in normal mode but I still get the error.

Is anyone able to offer any suggestion please? If you need any more info, just ask

Hi Nick,

This little gem fixed my issues with Vista™ -v- Xp ® Home Edition.

Give it a try, as those 'permissions' in Vista™ can send you around the twist quicker than a bushfire can destroy a forest.

Let me know how you fare with it.

On the XP machine, do this:

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

On the Vista machine, do this:

Start, Run, regedit

Navigate to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

In the right, double-click "LmCompatibilityLevel"

Change the value to 1 (probably currently 3)

Restart your computer

Thank you John, I had found the registry hack in another of your threads on TSF and also another site too so i'll give that a try tomorrow.
