Lost access to computer after adding nic
Hey everyone....
I'm very computer literate (A+), but I am stumped. I added a Linksys 10/100 PCI NIC to my main desktop a couple of days ago (bypassing the internal NIC, which may or may not have been causing random reboot trouble). The only things other than that one hardware change was to configure the new static IP address and update my router with the new MAC address. The internal NIC is disabled; I have no need for it at this time. Before making these changes, my network was working just fine; file/printer sharing was great. After making those changes, no other computer on my network can access my desktop. This is a problem: this is where install files, data and backups are stored (along with music and videos). I can access other computers and the internet with no problem. I can't for the life of me find the cause of the problem. I want to suspect the binding order of the NICS, but I can't remember and find where to change this info in XP. |

Check the XP firewall settings.

Re: Lost access to computer after adding nic
I hate Windows firewall. It is always off.
I am using Norton Internet Security (will go back to AVG when subscription for Norton runs out). Didn't need to change anything there. I didn't need to change any settings other than the MAC address for the new NIC on my router for the static IP address being used. |

Re: Lost access to computer after adding nic
Well, obviously you need to change something!
![]() Did you disable ALL the firewalls to see if that helps?

Re: Lost access to computer after adding nic
The firewall is disabled. Still no connection to the computer with the new NIC.
The firewall is set to allow any computer connected to the router. Last edited by Dragondog; 06-19-2007 at 03:57 PM. Reason: Adding more words |

Re: Lost access to computer after adding nic
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:
Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
