Network File Sharing Help

I have a similar problem to Unique2 - I have a home network (workgroup) set up with 3 to 4 machines. 1 (Main) is hardwired to the Netgear router and cable modem; 2 (Photo) is wireless; and 3 and 4 are laptops.

The problem is that I cannot access the shares on Main from the other machines. I can see the shares, but when I try to access, I get that stupid message about not having appropriate permissions. I can share the printer, however from all the machines. The printer is connected to Main.

From Main, I can access shares on Photo and the laptops when they are connected. And I can access shares on the laptops from Photo and vice versa. The problem is just Main. I have AOL Security installed on Main and suspect that's the problem. The firewall shows that the ip addresses for all the machines are allowed access. I have also tried disabling the firewall and I STILL can't access the shares.

Any suggestions?

Re: Network File Sharing Help

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Re: Network File Sharing Help

How about the exact error message you get?

Re: Network File Sharing Help

Thank you for starting the new thread for me. I was not sure if that was the appropriate thing to do.

The exact message is: \\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied.

Main, Photo and 1 laptop are running windows xp pro. The second laptop is running windows vista.

Re: Network File Sharing Help

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't work, create a user account on Main with the same name/password as is used to logon to each of the other machines. See if this eliminates the permission issue.

Re: Network File Sharing Help

Hi. Sorry for the delay in responding - I've been away.

Anyway, I tried the registry modification and I already had the pc's with the same user names and loggin information.

Still cannot access shares on Main from Photo and now I just noticed another anomaly: I can access all the shares on Photo from Main except for one folder - the "SharedDocs on Photo" folder. Weird, huh?

Re: Network File Sharing Help

I was just reading the post by Lounge Act1 and your replies. Two questions:

How do I check to make sure that Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled? and Does Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing need to be started or disabled for XP Pro with SP2?

Re: Network File Sharing Help

Please disregard the first question, I found the answer to that. I'd still like clarification on the second question because I keep reading conflicting statements about it. Thanks.

Re: Network File Sharing Help

You don't need ICS running to network.
