pcAnywhere converted file to {D} extension during file transfer session

Hello all,

I have installed pcanywhere 11 (PCA) to remotely manage my other pc located in my basement (let say pc B while my main pc is A). However i noticed during file transfer session (from B to A) some files were randomly converted by PCA and end up with the extension *.{D} I have to change manually these extensions back to their original everytime. That happened to avi, mpg, txt, rar...well almost every type of file and it's random.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't use PCA, but I find UltraVNC works well. I'm curious why you use PCA to transfer files on a local network, why not just use Windows Explorer? That will certainly fix the file renaming issue!

Re: pcAnywhere converted file to {D} extension during file transfer session

Johnwill, Thanks for ur reply.

Since i want to transfer files between my PCs and remotely control the one on my basement my friend told me about PCA and since he has a copy i decided to give it a try. I thought about using XP file sharing interface but i gave up because i couldn't properly hook up the 2 PCs, i guess because i'm using XP Home. Furthermore, i don't think i could remote control my PC using XP home interface.

The thing is I'm just curious why i ended up with the .{D} extension using PCA?!?! If i could'nt find the reason nor a solution i'll check another alternative. Now that you mentioned UltraVNC i will take a look.

Thank again.

Re: pcAnywhere converted file to {D} extension during file transfer session

Since UltraVNC does such a good job for me, it's been years since I've looked at PCA, and I don't have much use for Symantec products. Since the two machine are already networked, I'm surprised you can't file share between them, you've done the hard part. Here's some networking tips.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.
