port problem "i think"

hi. i have a Lynksys AM300 modem runnning with a 1.5mb connection. yet my download speeds seem to be extremly low. i am using azureus and my average download speeds are like 10-20kbs. which is crap. i had a look at the help on azureus and it's saying somthing about opening ports through your modem that are the same ones azureus is using. im not quiet sure how this all works. but if someone could help me with like a "dummies" sorta quide that would be appreciated. so sick of not getting my internets full potential.

thnx Damo.
