home network problem!
hi
I have a hub connected to 2 computers both xp's HE, but the problem is i dont see any shared files in both of them, and when i ping them i always get request timed out as the following: Pinging 211.30.147.235 with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for 211.30.147.235: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss), I enabled the sharing by right clicking and sharing & security then i click on share this folder, but i dont see anything on the other computer. and i guess all the physical connections are right because it says LAN is connected at the right bottom corner for both of them. Actually, i was going to buy a router, but i needed some files from the other pc so soon, so i borrowed the hub from my friend, but it seems im having some troubles, so please if you can help as soon as possible i would greatly appreciated. and thanx.

Re: home network problem!
yes, you can share the internet with a hub, but its not going to be as fast as a switch. i would suggest buying a switch to replace the hub. it functions the same, but provides 100% bandwidth to each computer instead of sharing it across all of them. as for allowing the firewall to let in file sharing, im not really sure, but im sure someone can help. what firewall program is it (windows, norton, etc)?

Re: home network problem!
If you're connecting directly to a modem with a hub and getting multiple public IP addresses, it's a REALLY BAD IDEA! You are wide open to all sorts of Internet threats!
Please tell us in detail what networking equipment you have. You really want a router between you and the Internet if you're sharing files!

Re: home network problem!
yeah, thats true. i just assumed you were going modem->router->hub->computers. getting multiple ip addresses like that is a bad idea, and on top of that, it uses up available addresses for other people.

Re: home network problem!
actually, im gonna buy a router soon, but as i said i borrowed the hub from my friend, bcos i really needed now, and dont have time to buy a router this couple days. so i have a 10/100mbps Nway hub, and it says on it 'fast ethernet switch' with 8 ports. i have an etherenet cable(cat5) goes from my adsl modem to the hub, and another two cables(cat5) go from hub to each computer.
and the ip addresses are: 211.30.147.220 (can access internet), realtek RTL8139 family pci fast ethernet NIC 211.30.147.221 (can not access internet), intel b255x-based pci ethernet adaptor(10/100) and i dont know what do you mean by multiple address!!! i tried to change ip's many times but still cant get the internet to both pc's thanx for reply |

Re: home network problem!
Most ISP's only allocate one public IP address for a customer, another reason for a router.
Really, I wouldn't waste time trying to solve this issue, you need to isolate them from the Internet anyway. Buy the router.
