Help sharing files on a wireless network

Hi, first post here... i'm not much for computer tech, so if i need to make anything clearer, please tell me.

I've been using a wirless network in my apartment for someone, both my laptop and my desktop connect to it (as well as my roommates laptop, but his computer doesn't concern me). I have it set up so that the cable modem connects to my netgear router, which my two computers connect to wirelessly. Recently, i decided i'd like to be able to share files between the two computers, i had done this in my previous home and thought it would be easy. Not so much this time around.

I ran the network setup wizard first on my desktop, using "HOME" as the network name and "SIMON" as the computer's name, and then i restarted. After restart, i did the same thing on my laptop using "HOME" as the network and "SIMONMOBILE" as the laptop name, and restarted the laptop.

Now, if i click "view workgroup computers" from my desktop, i can see only my desktop. If i click the "view workgroup computers" from my laptop, it takes about 30 seconds, and gives me the following error message

"Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

I've turned off all firewalls, and still get the same message... tried a couple other suggestions on the net, but i've found nothing...

I appreciate any help

Can you ping each computer from the other by name? If not, how about by IP address?

Re: Help sharing files on a wireless network

I was able to ping the computers by ip (didn't try name)

Anyhow, today i was able to see "SIMONMOBILE" under workgroup computers on both computers, and from my desktop i could take files off of my laptop. However, my desktop no longer shows up under workgroup computers even when i'm on my desktop... when i click "my network places" i don't even see any of the shared files from my desktop that i used to always see there...

You need to also try by name.
