network drive
Hello,
so here's the deal. Here at college I have a desktop and a laptop. I also only have one network jack so I have that jack (the wall in other words) plugged into a router and the desktop is plugged into the router and then my laptop just uses the wireless internet from the router. Anyways a few months ago, when my desktop was working I was running it as a server sort of (it was basically just on all the time) and I had it mapped as a network drive so that if I was online (anywhere on campus) I could just type \\my server's ip into the run window and it would bring it up and whatnot. I had some folders shared and whatnot too obviously. The problem is I cannot get this to work again, so I was hoping someone could tell me how. I'm not really getting any errors I'm just at a loss. thanks Jeff |

Re: network drive
You now have a router NAT layer between you and the college network. FWIW, the previous configuration was VERY insecure, since most anyone could access your machine, and I suspect you didn't really want that.
I'd setup an FTP server, forward port 21 through the router, and you can then simply use FTP with user name/password protection to access the files.

Re: network drive
Ok, I think I found the "port forward" but it wants the following info: application, port from, protocol (TDP or UDP drop down menu), IP address, and port to. Then there's just an enable check box. I've got nothing on how to fill those in.
I'm also fuzzy on how to set up an ftp server. Thanks again Jeff |

Re: network drive
Visit www.portforward.com, they have excellent tutorials on port forwarding for all sorts of applications.

Re: network drive
Couple things.....
First is that that portforward site doesn't have my router, and that's including the fact that I'm not using the default firmware. Second thing...I tried using this ftp tutorial, but got horribly lost on the way. So if I do manage to forward the port how do I set up the ftp server? |

Re: network drive
Ok, well I was running thru that tutorial again I thought I had everything all set, but when I type, "f t p: / /xxxxxxxxxxx" (spaces in there so it won't turn into a link) into IE it won't connect-something about the connection being reset.
I think maybe my firewall is blocking it. I use comodo personal firewall and I don't know how to tell it to open certain ports ( I already forwarded the port on the router). I'm just plain confused... Last edited by wootmachine9000; 03-28-2007 at 09:01 PM. |

Re: network drive
Why not disable the firewall and see if that helps out?

Re: network drive
Ok, so I disabled the firewall and give it a shot. I was all excited when a window came up for my username and password, but quickly dismayed when I discovered that it wouldn't accept my password. So I changed the password on the ftp server and tried again-no luck, then I changed it again-still no luck.
I'm really unsure what's wrong now. |

Re: network drive
"could not login to the ftp server with the username and password specified" is what is says at the top of the password window after I try mine after connecting to the server. I keep trying -no luck, and I've tried changing my password and username multiple times.
