Desktop to Laptop Sychronization
Hello everyone. I am new here and found this forum when searching for a solution to the problem I am about to present. Hopefully some of you can help.
I just purchased a laptop and would like to have it automatically syncronize with my desktop at least every day. I want to have "My Documents" on each computer and be able to change files on either computer whenever, then when my laptop finds my home wireless network, say when I get home from work in the afternoon, it automatically syncs the "My Documents" folder. I thought about just sharing my desktop documents folder, but then I will have to be connected to my network to access them from my laptop. This leaves only the synchro option. I found some programs online to do this, but have no idea which ones are good. Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

Give SyncToy a look, the price is right.

So far so good. I am using allway sync. Currently, I have it setup to sync the "My Documents" folder and my favorites folder. It took a little while to figure out and get setup, but it was not too bad. So far it has worked pretty good. A few files refused to sync for no apparent reason, so I had to do it manually. It did warn me they did not sync, so as far as I know, the rest did fine. Another feature I like is if deletes any files, for whatever reason, it will put them in a deleted folder (if you tell it to), that way, if there was a problem, you file is not lost forever. I plan to check that folder every few days to make sure everything looks ok. So far so good.
Bibitob, yes, it uses my home network to sync. I have it setup to run every time my laptop is turned on. The only catch is that any folder on the computer you are syncing to must be shared, and to do 2 way syncing, it must be set to "allow others to change my files.' This could be a problem for some people, but I am the only person that uses my network for file transfer, and it is protected, so I am not too worried about it.
