Can only share one way between XP & 98SE??
I have come to my wits end on this :( so I HOPE someone out there has had the same problem and can send me in the right direction.
First of all, I am new to this forum and would like to say "Well Met" to everyone! I have a home network consisting of: one desktop running Windows XP Pro (I will refer to this as "Quantex" as it was the manufacturer, one Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop running Windows XP Pro, and one Gateway desktop running Win 98 SE. They are all connected physically to a Linksys Router which accepts my broadband via a cable modem. I have set up all three computers for networking how I have always done. I can actually 'see' the three computers in the My Network Places on both XP units as well as in the Network Neighborhood on the 98SE unit. From the 98SE unit I can access the shared items on all three computers. However, when I double click the 98SE icon on either XP unit, I get an error message: \\98SEcomputername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource...The network path was not found. My 98SE unit is set up for password access, not user access, and has no domain set up. The protocols seem to be in place and in the bindings of the TCP/IP. From the command.com\ipconfig prompt of all three - units when I type 'net view' I can see all three computer names. But, when I ping each unit, the 98SE ping times out on the XP machines! When I look at the 98SE machine from itself, it shows me 4 sets of IP info; three with all zeros and then the correct one. The file sharing is set up only on the main login and I have tried setting up each computer with a Microsoft Networking logon password. I have installed and uninstalled NETBEUI to no avail. I have turned off the ICP passwords, but they work the same while they are on. I am at a total loss. I would think that the trouble would be the other way around with XP's security! Does anyone out there have a clue as to what I can try next? I don't want to install XP on the 98SE machine because it has a lot of development programs that I use but don't have the CD's to reinstall. (the 98SE unit was given to me a couple years ago from a private college who was upgrading). Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!! ![]()

I'm somewhat at a loss if you installed NETBEUI on all three machines, since that's a bandaid that normally bypasses most TCP/IP configuration issues.
Start, Run, COMMAND to open a DOS window: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here.

here is the ipconfig you requested.

IS AOL THE PROBLEM?? SHOULD I DELETE IT AND FIX THE NETWORKING AND REINSTALL? IF THIS DOESN'T HELP AT ALL, I WILL START BY REINSTALLING NETBEUI AGAIN; MAYBE I DID SOMETHING WRONG DURING THAT PROCESS. Thank you again John! ![]()

NETBEUI is dirt simple to install, for everything but XP, you just add it as a protocol. For XP, you have to put a couple of files in the correct places, then add it as a protocol. No other configuration is required. Here's the XP instructions.
To install NetBEUI on Windows XP: Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive (close the Autorun window) and use the explore option from a right click of the drive in My Computer then go the \Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder. Copy Nbf.sys to the "Windows"\System32\Drivers folder. Copy Netnbf.inf to the "Windows"\Inf folder (hidden: change the View Settings). (Where "Windows" is the name of the folder that windows is installed in) Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections. Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click Properties . On the General tab, click Install. Click Protocol, and then click Add. Click to select NetBEUI Protocol from the list and then click OK. Restart your computer if you receive a prompt to complete the installation. The NetBEUI protocol should now be installed and working. If you have an OEM installation or don't have the XP CD, you can also download the necessary files from: NETBEUI Install Files for XP

John, Sure Enough!!!! That was the answer; and I passed right over it. I had not installed the files properly on my XP machines for NETBEUI. I just want to bonk myself over the head!! I guess that's why you're the professional!! I don't know how to thank you. I can usually work through most issues, but this one threw me. By the way, I am working towards the Microsoft MCP certification myself and I guess I was in the dark because I never knew there was such a thing as MVP! That is the coolest thing! Unfortunately I cannot help out financially to support the site, else I would have had a pro working on this in the first place ;) But, I WILL make the site known to all I can and as soon as I am able, will make a donation. I am also in the process of building my umteenth website (hopefully this will be satisfactory to me, I am such a ...'perfectionist' let's say). I will read through your rules and reg's first, and then if allowed, I will add a link from my site. For now all I can say is THANK YOU! 10-4 Roger Wilco and OUUUUUUT.
