Help the Newbie?
I would like to be able to share files between my desktop and laptop.
Desktop: WinXP Home (I'm assuming it's SP1) Laptop: WinXP Media Center Edition (SP2) I have a crossover cable and would like to know the easiest way to share files. I have tried to find guides to show me how but I find ones that talk about installing new drivers and using routers, HUBs, or something else that I don't need/want to do. My computer names are different with the same workgroup. The IP addresses 192.168.1.42 and 192.168.1.x (not sure what the x is on desktop without looking) Subnet masks are 255.255.255.0 and I am familiar with how to ping them. I know how to make folders sharable. I have McAfee firewall on both PCs and would have no problem disabling them. (Windows firewall as well) I don't expect for someone to explain all the steps but I have looked everywhere for a guide that fits my situation and maybe someone knows of one or has one that would help me. I have heard that you can just use Windows Explorer to view/transfer files from one computer to another and this is what I am interested in. I am new to networking and have no Idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

hello, if you have your utp cross cable, connect it in to your computers.
set your IP address to 192.168.1.1 for the first and 192.168.1.2 for the other, subnet mask is the same 255.255.255.0 and workgroup must be the same. ping the IP of the other computer to check if it they are connected. Share the folder, then try to access it. hope it can help you. |
