Remote Desktop Access
I'm not sure if this is where I should be asking this, but i will anyway
I'm not 100% sure what this does. Will it let me access my desktop on my laptop from anywhere in my house (well in reach of my wireless router)? What does it enable me to do, can I open up problems such as word through my laptop then work and save the files as if I was on the pc. Can I use laptop applications, as well as ones on my PC at the same time? On a non-work note, will it allow me to use games (i.e FM manager) using the PC to do all the processing? And can anyone point me to a guide that will help me set it up? Sorry for all the questions but any help would be great. Cheers, Ash |

Remote Desktop connection will let you remotely control another computer that is accessible from your network. You should have no issues using it to connect to your PC from your laptop; as long as they can see each other on the network. The PC you are connecting to must also have a password and the option to allow remote access turned on. To turn this on: Right click on My Computer go to Properties
Go to the Remote tab Check the box that reads: Allow users to connect remotely to this computer Click OK and reboot your computer. You should know the IP address of your PC also. To find this: Click on Start Click on Run Type in cmd press OK Type ipconfig press Enter Your IP address will be listed there. Go to your laptop and open Remote Desktop Connection. Put the IP address from the PC into the middle box and press Connect. You will be prompted for the User name and Password for the PC. Once you enter the information you will be logged into the PC. There are additional options in the Remote Desktop. Before you connect, click on Options. Display Tab: In here you can change the screen resolution of the PC while you are looking at it. Local Resources: Near the bottom you can share access to hard drives and printers. Meaning if you share the hard drives you can save items to either system. Once you are connected you can use programs on either system and save them on either (as long as the option is turned on). If you are accessing the PC and opening the application that is installed on the PC, the PC will use its own processing power. But just remember that you are using bandwidth while doing this; so if you were to try and play an online game there may be some lag. As a side note…this acts like you are logged into the PC, meaning if someone logs on you will loose your connection. I hope this helps. |

Ok im still having problems.
My computers dont see each other on the network, i.e. there not on my network places. Does it matter that they are both connected via a wireless router with a built in modem? How do i get them to see each other. I've mucked around with the network wizard and wireless network wizard, but nothing.. |

I disabled my firewalls to test and still doesn't work.
![]() They are in the same workgroup but when i click on browse for more or the remote desktop access thing, it says there are no terminal servers. When I put the ip in I get an error message about remote connections not being enabled or the other computer being too busy. It also says network problems could also be the problem. On my desktop pc, do I have to make an account, just to use with this? |

Just go to www.logmein.com and get LogMeIn Free. It lets you do exactly the same stuff as you're trying to do but the way it's set up (http tunneling if you care) means that you don't have to disable your firewalls or anything. I use it a ton and it works great.

hi,
sorry to but in here, but i am also interested in remote access. i have been using gotomypc.com. is this basically the same thing as logmein? (except there is a monthly fee after the 30-day trial). it has been working great and i'm thinking especially after reading this thread that maybe it's worth it. what do you think? thanks dave |

Remote Desktop
Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread. I've created a new thread for your issue here. Thanks for your cooperation.

I've used both Logmein and gotomyPC and I really have to reccomend Logmein over it. For what purposes do you need it? Logmein free provides more than enough functionality for me personally without having to pay a monthly fee. On top of that they have a really great userbase on their forums so anytime I have a problem or question its resolved really quickly. Just my two cents Also Johnwill where is the new thread you created? I'd be happy to post in that one but I couldn't find it. |

Hi Adchick,
I had a similar issue, but with my file sharing on a work group. The easiest possible way in In order to actually access remote computers, is to use a program called 'Real VNC' it is free for download on http://www.realvnc.com/ and works in a smilar (but far more none complicated way) as Windows remote desktop, give this a go and let me know if you notice any difference and if it will actually work. Thanks Mate, hope this helps DR. Stripez |
