Internal Wireless

I have just purchased an internal wireless mini PC card adapter for my IBM Thinkpad. I have installed it after going through a rather rough install. Now all of my drivers are correct and the device is able to search for my wireless network. I seem to be havinga problem connecting to the internet. I can not go out from IE to the internet. When I open up a DOS window and try to ping yahoo.com or google.com I two timeouts and then 2 replys. Any one have any ideas?

When you ping yahoo.com, are the two replies correct? Have you successfully connected to update applications, or something like AIM?

Have you disabled encryption to see if that helps? How about changing channels on the router?

I have not been able to connec to update applications. I am only getting two replies, however sometimes I get more time outs..the number goes up and down. I tried to disable WEP and change the channel, it didn't fix the problem. Thanks. Any more ideas?

What version/patch level of Windows do you use? What's the exact model of the laptop? What's the make/model of the wireless adapter? What make/model of router do you have? Have you disabled all of the "turbo" functions in the router wireless section?

Windows XP Professional SP2

IBM Thinkpad R40e (2681)

D-Link DWL 650 (PC Card)

D-Link DI-514 <standard> 802.11b Wireless Router

No turbo features enabled, it is a standard router.

Thanks,
-Mike

Try to ping your D-Link router and see what happens?

Should be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

Ping -t (continuous) if you are having drop outs to your router you have issues that need to be sorted.

Interference from 2.4 GHz cordless phones or possibly a similar channel wireless router.

Do live in a house, townhouse, apartment or condo?

What type of Internet connection do you have? Cable, DSL or other?

I am sorry let me make a correction. My internal wireless piece is an IBM Dual band 11a/b Wireless Mini PCI adapter. I live in a regular home and I have 4 other systems connected to my router, so I think we can rule out the wireless phone issue. Let me get back with you on the ping question.

I'd also try plugging it directly into the router and see if a wired connection works properly, just to rule out non-wireless issues.

I have been able to get it working with a DWL-650 PC Card adapter. That is what I am using right now to get online. I purchased this internal wireless piece and am trying to get it working properly. The D-link card works fine but the mini pc card from IBM is not working. I have the IBM partnumber for you if this might help. I might want to try to re-install the driver, or possibly get an updated one. Part Number: 22p6305 If you could set me up with a link to the driver download that would be great.

I have the results of the continuous ping of both the router and yahoo.com. I will get a timeout, followed by 3-5 replies, and then the process almost repeats itself. So this is making me believe it is an adapter issue and not a router issue. I will continue to look into the BIOS enablement of the device. Thanks again for all of your help. I hope the ping results will offer you some clues.

One last thing to mention, some of these internal adapters and laptops have antennas inside them and if the antenna wiree is not connected, you will have really weak signal strength and questionable connections.

Your laptop may or may not have the internal antenna, but it is worth checking into.

This link might be helpful, it also has a video on installation as well.

The internal antenna is on my system and is somthing that I purchased after market. This is the one that I am having problems with. Both wires that connect to the device internally are connected properly. I think I may have to call IBM on this one. I have contaced Phillips (who manufactures this) and they offered little help. I will keep you posted on this issue. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

I took my Laptop to another Wireless B location and the same problem had occured. This is another indication that it is an adapter issue and not a router issue. Again, I will keep you posted.

I saw that this has been requested on different threads. Maybe this might shed some light on a solution.

Well, since the IPCONFIG looks reasonable, let's reset the TCP/IP to installation defaults and see if that clears things up. I had to do this when I installed SP2 on my laptop.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

I tries the steps you listed again no changes. Could this chip just be defective? Should I just get my money back or try to exchange the part.

IBM said the device might be defective and are now sending me a replacement part. I don't know if the gave up on me, or if the device is defective. I will keep this thread up to date. I appreciate your time and effort.
