changing from dialup to cable
I have dial up and I'm changing to adelphia cable. They are hooking up my computor but I have a second one I want to hook up allso.I no I'll need a router any certian kind I should get? since adelphia is hooking the one up will I only need one ethernet cable my boy tells me I'll need 2 of them and 2 ethernet cards, don't understand why since the one is all ready going to be working.Which is better a wire or wireless router.I was looking at them and some of them claim to be faster than others does that mean running 2 computors will slow things down a lot?thanks for any help.

1st make sure your cable modem has an ethernet cable output. This will run into the WAN port on the router.
If the computers are close to the cable modem, then a wired router will be ok. If not, go with a wireless model. If you go wireless, you will need a wireless nic for computer #2. The speed they talk about is how fast the wireless computer can send info to the router. Even the slowest speed units (802.11B) run at 11 Mbs. This is much faster than most peoples cable connections. The only advantage to having a faster model is you can transfer files from one computer to the other more quickly. Please turn on the encryption if you go wireless. If you need help, post back.

Cheap and simple way is to put a normal NIC in each computer and connect them by a Crossover Cable.
The disadvantage of this is that you will have to have the main computer switched on for the secondry computer to access the Internet.

Actually kodi, although you save the $20-30 price of the router, using ICS is most certainly NOT the simple way to share a broadband connection.
A router is by far the preferred solution.

Using a simple router is by far the easiest setup you can have. It allows for file sharing, printer sharing, and expandability. ICS is cumbersome and slow and requires you to always have the "host" computer online in order for the other machines to get connected. Not cool...
A good router will run about $50 USD and offers 4 ports for connecting computers. A wireless one costs about $30 more and offers virtually unlimited scalability via the wireless connection. No wires is also nice. ![]()

Anyone that pays $50 for a wired router, or $80 for a 802.11g router doesn't know how to shop.
