Basic Question about Network Cables

Hi, Just wondering what types of ethernet cables should be used for online gaming? Is this a stupid question? Is cat 9 ok? Also can you play online games (call of duty) behind a university firewall? Its not working for me.

In my humble opinion, cables capable of speeds much exceeding the available connection speed is just overkill. But that shouldn't keep it from working. The firewall is likely the biggest factor. Unless you're on real good terms with the admin, I'm afraid you're out of luck. Your online gaming would demand considerable bandwidth, and the admin isn't likely to give it up for you.

Thanks!

I am on good terms with the university admin. So he can give me more bandwith if i ask? Its summer so i cant see any reason for him to need it all. Might as well use it to get my war on. I'll ask and Ill post when i find out anything,
Thanks

The cable should not matter unless you are on a gigabit network or running very long wires.

More bandwith would be nice, but you also need access to ports that the University will have blocked at the firewall. It is not likely they will open ports for you.

My System

call of duty, and alot of other games like it, require a large number of ports to be opened.

mechwarrior 3 requires more than 300 ports to be opened.

i don't know how many call of duty requires, but i can tell you that on alot of games, it's a ton easier to set your self up on the "DMZ" or "virtual DMZ" than it is to manually enter all these port values to the forward list.

however, you might not be able to talk anyone into doing all the work to type them in, and alot of admins will flat out refuse to set you up on a DMZ of any kind.

i myself run DMZ'ed in my router, for mechwarrior.
i'd rather just use zonealarm anyhow.

but, a google search should let you on to the number of ports that will need to opened for call of duty, and you might luck out, and find it's only a few.
