longer ethernet cable
Hi there
My PC is windows XP SP2. I had it connected to a router using a 5m ethernet RJ45 cat5e cable - works great. Got a longer cable to move PC (15m). Cable is same spec but PC now displays 'limited or no connectivity' - can anyone tell me what has gone wrong? I have tested the new cable with a laptop and it works fine. Does the network card have limited range, do i need a new card? When i re-connect the old cable all is well again. Any help would be appreciated. Thank-you Colin |

Re: longer ethernet cable
I would have to think the end of the cable is not making the proper connection with your desktop RJ45 socket, try switching the end your plugging into the pc with the end in the router or return it and get another cable.

Re: longer ethernet cable
I'd bet money the cable is wired wrong or the connectors are not properly installed.

Re: longer ethernet cable
That actually isn't a foolproof method of determining if the pairs are wired properly. Many times a cable will function (perhaps slowly) with one NIC and fail with another with the pairs not wired properly. It also depends on the length of the cable. I've seen this so many times in offices where they changed the computer and suddenly the network doesn't work. Checking the cable and fixing the connections also fixes the problem.
It's cheap to check the cable, there's no reason not to eliminate that as a possibility.

Re: longer ethernet cable
If you have other wired computers try plugging that ethernet to the laptop if it doesn't work then I'm expecting it to be a NIC configuration issue.
Do you have a Gigabit Ethernet card. You mentioned that you were using a cat 5e UTP cable. Check the properties of your network card what does it say for speed and Duplex? |
