Printer server problem
I bought a usb printer server, and it came with a UK a/c adaptor so I did some modding, and made it into a US adaptor. The drivers software found the printer server, and when I got to the second step it wouldn't read it again. I even tried the first step over again, tried turning it off, and turning it back on, but nothing.
Help is apreciated. Its an Iogear GPSRO1U print usb print server. Basically where there are 2 prongs coming out for the UK I took that box apart, cut the positive, and negative wire, and cut a 3 prong computer cord. I used the brown wire as the positive, and the blue as the negative. It worked for a few seconds, and the light on the printer server is on so I am clueless of what is wrong. The light on the printer server will only go out when I unplug it since it has no power button.

Re: Printer server problem
Is the adaptor still outputting the correct voltage? Check with a voltmeter.

Re: Printer server problem
I am not sure. I usually shove the multimeter end in the a/c adaptor when I check it, but the end that plugs in the printer server is too small to shove the multimeter end in.
I don't know any other way to test it. I uncovered the wires, and used the multitester. It reads 3.47 volts constantly. I was touching the wires for about 1 minute. The power adaptor box says 3.3 volts, and 2 amps.

Re: Printer server problem
I'm betting that print server requires 5V DC, not 3.5. Wait... Yep, I have that print server in my closet, and the P/S that's with it is a 5VDC 2A supply. I don't know why you have a 3.3 volt supply.

Re: Printer server problem
The iogear manual shows the printer server, and an arrow pointing to the power port, and it shows 3.3v 2A.
Are you sure its the same exact iogear you have? GPSRo1u? I am going to have to call them up and see if they will send me the right power adaptor for free, but doubt it. If I was in Europe I would have the same issues would I not?

Re: Printer server problem
Hmm... Mine may be a slightly older model, it's this one: http://www.iogear.com/product/GPSU01/. However, when I search for your model, that's the page they bring me to at IOGear.
I can't imagine why they're using 3.3V for a USB device, they really need +5 somewhere for the interface anyway.

There it says 3.3v. Also why would my computer read the printer server for 30 seconds, and then stop? Seems like the printer server is fried or something which don't make sense unless I got a dud.

Re: Printer server problem
Sure enough, I don't know why that didn't show up in my search.
SInce the voltage is correct, I'd send it back to IOGEAR and get a replacement.

Re: Printer server problem
Ok. thanks. I already contacted them through e-mail about that. I called them a couple days ago, and the guy didn't seem to noligeable. He said the printer server won't work with vista, but I tried it with xp, and it did the same thing. I am 99.9% sure if I didn't have a defective one it would work with vista.

Re: Printer server problem
UK voltage is 230V, while US is 110V.
Was the power supply designed for use with variable voltage ? Anyway, if you've chopped wires there's no way the manufacturer will take it back. |

Re: Printer server problem
Well, my older model has a universal P/S, so it's hard to believe that one is any different.

Re: Printer server problem
Found out what the problem was. I bought another iogear printer server which was a wired one. Didn't know that, anyways it had the same a/c adaptor, and that did the same thing.
I pressed the reset button, and that didn't work so I unplugged it, pressed the reset button, and plugged it in while holding the reset button for about 20 seconds, and let go. Now my computer can see my printer wirelessly, and I can sell my other Iogear wired printer server. It just stinks that all I had to do was unplug it, and hold the reset button in for a while, and plug it in while holding it. I tried multiple times resetting it while it was turned on, but that didn't work.

Re: Printer server problem
Glad you sorted it out, I wouldn't have thought of that.
