Additional phone line, connection to NID?
i'm going to run a 2nd phone line into my house. It's not going to be a second phone number but a second line existing on my current phone number. i recently did some rearranging and want to put my router/modem/server in one place but there is no phone jack close enough. i want to connect to my network interface device outside the house and run the new wire inside. In looking around the net, information is available on how to connect a 2nd phone line but they all seem to relate to a 2nd phone and number.
Opening up my nid i have two connections, labeled cleverly as 1 and 2. There is nothing connected to 2 and there is a connection in 1. My question is when i connect my new line do i install the wires to 1 or 2? 1 does seem like the logical choice but i didn't know if there was any problems (shorts, signal degradation) if i were to wrap all the wires around the same pegs. Also i bought Cat3 station wire, is this the correct wire for this type of connection? Thanks for the assistance! |

Re: Additional phone line, connection to NID?
Actually, you'll have to parallel to the one line that's connected, the second set of connections is really for the second phone number and line.
Since you're running wires, I suggest the following wiring for the modem. Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco NID (Network Interface Device). This is the place the telephone lines come into your home wiring, usually either in the basement or outside near the other utilitiy connections. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand. The splitter I've used in the past is the Wilcom PS-36, it's good for any DSL/ADSL service worldwide. This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.

Re: Additional phone line, connection to NID?
That looks like a simple straightforward connection. Exactly what i was looking for. Even better, looking at the Wilcom PS-36 pdf diagram it seems like i can just split my main phone wire anywhere before the connection to the phone and make the appropriate connections inside. No need to drill another hole in the side of the house. The existing phone line goes into a hole barely big enough for one wire.
Oh, btw it also looks like it acts as a filter? Does that mean i can eliminate the filters attached to each phone? i see your in SE Pa.. Philly by any chance? If so from one philly boy to another THANKS!! |

Well, the Eagles still have a ways to go, they're not consistent.

Re: Additional phone line, connection to NID?
DOH! Famous last words...eh?
The wilcom splitter just arrived (in case anyone else wants to buy one get it from wilcom, they charge $40 w- no tax or shipping charge, other places are slightly cheaper but they charge at least $6 for shipping), so i'm sitting here looking at it and i'm a little confused. Here's the steps i was going to follow: 1. go outside disconnect the red and green wire from the NID. 2. inside i have a spot to cut the main phone wire, cut it. 3. take the side (wire) thats connected to the nid, strip off the green and red wires. 4 insert red wire on the left side of the wilcom box where it says LINE into the slot marked R. tighten screw. 5. insert green wire on the left side of the wilcom box where it says LINE into the slot marked T. tighten screw. 6. take yellow and black wires, secure them safely out of the way. don't expose the wires 7. take the side (wire) going to the phone and strip off the red and green wires. 8. insert red wire on the left side of the wilcom box where it says PHONE (on the bottom) into the slot marked R. tighten screw. 9. insert green wire on the left side of the wilcom box where it says PHONE into the slot marked T. tighten screw. 10. take yellow and black wires, secure them safely out of the way. don't expose the wires -OR- i could connect RJ-11 connectors to the end of both wires and simply plug them into the corresponding jacks on the right side of the wilcom box. That should complete the phone connection....correct? Now the part that's confusing me is the modem connection. i'm using a westel dsl modem and the connection coming in is a round phone cord with an RJ-11 connections on both ends, one end plugs into the wall jack/filter and the other plugs into the modem. This is the cord that comes with the modem and the one that is recommended to be used with the modem. The wilcom has an RJ-45 jack on the right side, if i plug in an ethernet cable into the wilcom where does the other end go? Or does this eliminate my modem altogether and i plug directly into the wilcom and the other end goes into my router? OR do i cut the end off the round phone cable and attach the red/green wires into the left side of the wilcom MODEM connections then plug the other end into the modem? i did call wilcom's technical support but they had already closed for the day. |

Re: Additional phone line, connection to NID?
The three connections to the splitter are for the incoming line, the modem going out, and the rest of the phone connections.
Wire the red to the R(ring) and the green to the T(tip) on the splitter for each of these connections. Job done.

Re: Additional phone line, connection to NID?
i was just looking at the wilcom site as i was waiting on the phone for their tech support and noticed that i should have ordered the PS-36-01, that one has a RJ-11 jack coming out for the modem, the PS-36 i purchased has an RJ-45 jack out to modem. BUT it doesn't matter because tech support told me that the PS-36 modem jack will accommodate either an RJ-45 or RJ-11. They build them that way. Now to get to work hookin this baby up.
Thanks for the assistance...once again! |

Re: Additional phone line, connection to NID?
Fan-effen-tastic! That's how it worked out!
Hookup was a breeze and my connection is better, it's 2-3 megs faster. Now i just need to be patient and wait for belkin to send me my replacement router, then i'll be able to hook up my switcher and then i can play with my toys....pc, 360, ps3, wii, server, location free player and video surveillance system. Well the pc and videogame systems i have been running back and forth plugging and unplugging as i use them..what a pain. i should get a cheap backup router. You'll see me around, i'll probably be back with more asinine questions for this board and others. Thanks again! |

Re: Additional phone line, connection to NID?
Glad that all worked out. Usually in-house wiring issues can be solved by simply eliminating the wiring from the DSL modem path.

Been playin them since i first encountered Pong waaayyy back in 75-76. And i need all the systems.....can't play Mario on the 360...can't play Uncharted on the Wii. i'm a fanboy but not a system fanboy, i'm a videogame fanboy. i'm not into sports or rpg games but everything else i'll at least rent it or try the demo to check it out. i spend more on renting then purchases so i rationalize my system purchases by "saving lots of money on renting" and buying only those games i'll either want for my small colletion or a game i'll be playing a looong time, like Burnout Revenge on the 360..one of my favorite games with almost 1700 hours put into it, most of which is online play. i didn't even mention that i own the psp and the ds as well but i might have to abandon the handhelds because i either need better glasses or longer arms but there is a good side to the eyes going bad, i need to keep buying bigger and bigger tv's
