EEK! Ethernet Cables Hacked !

Hi guys im new here so please have mercy!

I'm trying to find out if there is a piece of electricians hardware i can use to "ring out" some Ethernet cables in my office.

Basically there is a bunch of Ethernet cables hacked in half by the previous owner.

im trying to establish where and to which Ethernet box each cable goes to in the office so that i can attach a patch panel and try and fix this mess!!!

Many thanks in advance for any help offered

Re: Ethernet Cables Hacked !

There are line toners available that will help you do this. Any local electrical supplier should be able to recommend a suitable one to you.

Random link to a Toner, I do not endorse this one nor have I used it. But this is the type of device you are after.

Re: Ethernet Cables Hacked !

Patch panel?
Are you planning on placing a patch panel in where the lines are cut to reconnect them?

If it's Ethernet cabling, the terminology you want to use is "RJ-45". That is the name for the cable ends that look like over sized phone cables. you're going to want to know the color coding for the wires as well so you can attach new ends to the cable and get a functioning cable out of them.

This site has quite a bit of useful information on ethernet cables.

You will also need a special tool to connect the ends but any store that sells the RJ-45 patch panels should have all the info you need on the tool.

Re: Ethernet Cables Hacked !

Patch panels or 110 punch down blocks for data can purchased from a good electrical supply house or from Grainger locally or Blackbox, CDW on line.

Re: Ethernet Cables Hacked !

I like the toner and 110-block ideas. Both will make cleaning up your network a snap!
