cat6 standed vs solid

So I'm looking to run some network cable in my house to my desktop, XBox, & DVR going through the walls. The longest any wire will need to be is about 100' or so maybe a little longer. It will be going though the attic and over the kitchen. With it being a short distance I can use UTP, right? Do I really need STP? Also, I want to use cat6 instead of cat5e just because looking forward, I don't want to rerun wire late to upgrade. Well not very soon. Or, should I just go ahead and run cat5e (because its alot cheaper!)?

Or am I way off and UTP is not Standed and STP is not Solid. I'm so confused...

Woah ....... "P.S it will be running parallel with my electrical wiring. "
That's a definite no-no.
You need to keep a good distance between your electric cables and the ethernet cable. I forget the recommended distance, but probably 20cm (8 ins) should be good.
You can cross the cables at right angles, that's ok.

Anyway, if all you're talking is 100 feet, any Cat5e or Cat6 cable would be more than good.

UTP - Unshielded Twisted Pair This is what you will use.

STP - Shielded (or Screened) Twisted Pair

By the way, both use solid conductors.

Re: cat6 standed vs solid

maintain at least 12" seperation between cat- cables and electrical wireing. solid wire is good for inside walls, and stranded wire from wall plate to machine. avoid kinking or stretching the cable. if you use staples do not crimp the cable.
