Four port switch test for DLink 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch
I have a Dlink four port switch (Model No. DSS-5+) that was connected to a dsl modem called an Actiontec 701 supplied by the dsl vendor.
The DLink has been in use a long time (couple years at least) and then the XP operating system reported that the internet connection was "unplugged." The trickle charge from the cable did not show up as lighting up the LED indicator on the motherboard NIC either. Fortunately I had another newer Dlink four port switch in reserve. I hooked that up and everything is going ok. The question is: How can I test the old DLink? Is there some sort of loop back test where I can see if there is just a dead plug connection rather than pitching the thing out? I only actively use 2 connections plus the Actiontec input plug. Re: Four port switch test for DLink 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch
I'd start by getting a router instead of a switch.

Re: Four port switch test for DLink 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch
Erf, what for? The switch does everything needed and it came from a discussion on how to get two pc's wired for dsl and a small bit of file sharing.
The discussion and advice took place here on techsupportforum. Apparently the Actiontec having both USB and standard plug hookup Is the router of note. So to get two pc's running, the switch was needed. It's plug and play-- nothing to do. I just need to know how to test the old one off stream to see if it is just one plug connect or if "unplugged" from the system equals the device is shot. Is there way to plug into socket 5 and test the output plugs by simple cord connections? |

There are network testers to do this. But nothing low tech other than the pass/fail testing you've already discovered.
