Ethernet cable connectivity issue
Hello everyone,
I'm somewhat savvy when it comes to computers, but I have been trying to fix this problem for several hours now and I'm near my wit's end. I have a Linksys router which I have connected to my computer through an ethernet cable. Several hours ago, the connection just gave out with no warning. It wasn't the ISP or modem because my friend did not experience any problems. So, it must have been my computer (I switched cables and that wasn't the issue either). Under the device manager, I have "1394 Net Adapter" and "Intel(r)PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection" listed. There seems to be nothing wrong with either that the device manager is telling me. When I go under "Network Connections" I have "1394 Connection" and "Wireless Network Connection" available as options. I can still connect to the internet through wi-fi, but when I connect the ethernet cable, the modem shows no "blinking" and my computer does not seem to recognize any connection. I have restarted my computer several times. I have tried restoring it to a previous point. I have reset my router. Nothing has worked. Does anyone have any idea here? I would appreciate any input. FYI: I have a Windows XP Tablet PC, Toshiba Satellite R25, 1.60 GHz laptop. |

Re: Ethernet cable connectivity issue
By the way, I have done ipconfig /all and pinged 127.0.0.1.
Ping 127.0.0.1 Results: No loss, all four packets okay. Ipconfig /all Results: Ip routing enabled? - No WINS Proxy Enabled? - No DHCP Enabled? - Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled? - Yes |

Re: Ethernet cable connectivity issue
Do you have a Network Connection listed for your Ethernet NIC? You only mention your Firewire and your Wireless. Is it listed in Device Manager?

Re: Ethernet cable connectivity issue
Is your Ethernet card built into your Motherboard? Or is it an add-in card plugged into a PCI slot.
If it's part of the Motherboard, then make sure it's enabled in the BIOS. The BIOS usually describes it as just a LAN card. If it's a card plugged into a slot, shut down Windows, unplug the power from the computer, remove the LAN card. Then power the computer back up without the LAN card, then shut it back down. Replace the LAN card, if possible in a different slot. If Windows recognizes the LAN card, it should automatically install it. If not, the LAN card has probably failed and needs replacement. |

Re: Ethernet cable connectivity issue
Looks like you will need to contact Toshiba for that. The website for your model, which is here, says there is no user manual available for download. That usually means you have to ask for one. The link above should get you started for sending them an email.
Because incorrect BIOS settings can disable a computer, I prefer to make sure you have a proper BIOS instruction guide from the manufacturer rather than try to explain it through a forum. |
