laptop wireless card problem

well i have been having this problem for a while now... i have two laptops, one a toshiba L305 and the other a Gateway MT6723. The toshiba laptop's WIFI card works real well and from far distances. I cannot say the same for the Gateway. I have to be within 20 ft to get a signal. At the same distance from the router, my toshiba has an excellent signal and the gateway has either 2 or three bars. I have checked the antennas on the card itself and they are firmly attached. the card is firmly in the socket as well. I then got to thinking about other possibilities and options. I decided to take out the card from my toshiba and use it in the gateway, to see if it was a problem with the card or not. Now the problem is, I cannot get the gateway to see any networks with the toshiba card. I assumed that the driver would be installed at boot up, but windows vista could not find an appropriate driver. I am lost here, so i'm looking for some help here on the proper installation of a new, or borrowed wifi card. I was also wandering if there could be a problem on the other end of the antenna (I assume they are behind the LCD.) Any help would be great!
