169 IP Address keeps appearing -- even reformatted computer!!!!!!!?
I have a Local Area Connection network consisting of two computers and xbox 360. I use a BT voyager 2110 router and my broadband is usually pretty fast.
Xbox 360 and first computer connect fine. My computer is unable to connect to the internet. Under network connections the ip address is always 169.254.173.202. Sometimes when I reboot the computer or reboot the modem the ip address goes back to 192.168.1.something and I can connect to the internet fine but usually doesn't. I changed the ethernet cable and changed which port it was connected to and the problem didn't go away! I even reformatted my computer and the problem didn't go away! I am running out of ideas...do I just need to get a new computer because every laptop that connects to the router works just fine! Re: 169 IP Address keeps appearing -- even reformatted computer!!!!!!!?
169.254.X.X is an IP address your computer will assign to the network interface when it is set up to get its IP from a DHCP server (Automatic configuration), but there is not one available for whatever reason.
Are the link lights on your computer's NIC green and flashing? I'm assuming the cables and ports you've tried work fine with the other computers. It sounds more like a hardware failure or driver problem. Is it an onboard network card? What OS is running? |

What happens when you connect your computer directly to your Modem and reboot your modem and computer?
