nic card-limited connectivity
you guys are my last hope before i give up. please help if you can. a co-worker had a friend clear up some viruses on her laptop. He just reformatted with her Win XP Home disk. The laptop is a HP Pavillion ze2000. After the formatting, the nic card and the cd/dvd weren't working. She asked me to help. i went into the registry and changed a few keys to get her cd/dvd visible. Then i used her rescue disk to reload all the drivers. Device manager now says this device(the nic card) is working properly. the nic card is a Realtek 8139/810x Family Fast. BUT i have limited/no connectivity with it. TCPIP is setup to receive everything automatically. When you look at the "status" it shows connection, but no packets sent/received. This laptop has a wireless card which works fine-at my house. She doesn't have a wireless setup. Think she's using DSL also, while i'm trying to troubleshoot it with my cable connection through my router. IPCONFIG shows an ip address of 169.254.245.151 and subnet of 255.255.0.0-indicative of auto private ip addressing. i can remove the catv and plug it into my laptop right next to it and get, besides connection, an address of 192.168.1.102 with a dhcp server connection. i dont seem to be able to get the dhcp server connection with hers. i have used winsockxpfix to help reset things-didn't help. Microsoft had some registry changes to make to turn off the auto private ip addressing-but couldn't locate where they pointed me to. i know this is a long post, but i wanted you to know where i'm at, and what i've done so far...Thanks for any help....Jim

Re: nic card-limited connectivity
Open up a command prompt (Start > run > cmd)
Type the following bolded commands and post the results for each affected machine. ipconfig /all Note: To post results of commands, alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > select all > alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > copy > paste in a message here. If you are on a computer that can't connect to the internet then paste the contents in a text document and save it to a portable media like a flash drive, then use an internet capable machine to post the contents. Boot into safe mode with networking and see if you can get a connection.

Re: nic card-limited connectivity
If she's using DSL, what is the exact make/model of the modem or router you're connecting to? If this is a plain DSL modem, you probably have to configure PPPoE connections, which you don't have right now.
More data please.

Re: nic card-limited connectivity
O/S-Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2
NIC- Realtek 8139/810x Family Fast Router-Linksys WRT54G Wireless works, I'm trying to get the wired connection to work Do not know what DSL equipment she has at this time. Browser- IE No A/V-the computer was just recently formatted. Now i have a dumb question. i have never had DSL, and dont know much about connection issues. Here's my dumb question. IF i have a computer that uses DSL to connect to the Internet, and i take it over to my buddy's house, who has a cable connection through a router, will i be able to connect a catv cable directly from his router to my ethernet port and have an automatic connection to the Internet, with no settings issues? I ask this as i dont know if DSL sets some registry keys that need some alteration in order for things to work smoothly on a cable connection. Again, thanks for the help guys!! |

Re: nic card-limited connectivity
If you have a router in both places, there shouldn't be any issue, the connection should work seamlessly.

Re: nic card-limited connectivity
Uninstall the drivers for the card > reboot then reinstall the latest drivers available.

Re: nic card-limited connectivity
Setup a static IP and see if you can ping the router.
