CAT V distance

Was wondering what is the max range of Cat V cable when using an HDSL / Pair gain Modem?

Pretty much I have to provide services to a costumer that’s 400meters away from my site. We are using an AN-30 LOS connection right now but it's extremely unreliable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andi

Re: CAT V distance

Cat 5 cable is rated for 100 meters maximum.

Re: CAT V distance

I'd consider a fiber run if you can run a wired connection. It'll have no issues with the 400 meters.

Re: CAT V distance

CAT V is still only 100M even with an ADSL modem pushing the signal and not a normal NIC card or switch port? And fiber would be best but we can't support it.

Re: CAT V distance

Why can't you support a single fiber link? If you're going to run a 400 meter cable, I'd suggest running something that will do the job properly.

Running ADSL is not really an option unless you are a telephone company, since you need special equipment on the other end of the line. You can't just connect two ADSL modems end to end and expect anything useful to happen!

Re: CAT V distance

John I would love to be able to use fiber, but the problem is that I'm in Iraq and we don't have access to that fancy stuff. What I have is 4 Campus Rs HDSL modems and thousands of feet of CAT V and the battle captain over there is complaining that it takes him 20min to log on. They wan't to add more devices over there but untill I can get the bandwidth up there is now way it will support the extra load.

Anyway I appreciate the help, I guess ill tell the CPT that I need fiber hardware.

Re: CAT V distance

Other than stick a couple of repeaters in the run, I have no idea how you'd run the CAT5 that distance.

You 'Might" be able to get that distance if you limited the speed to say 10mbit and used CAT6 shielded cable, but I have no actual practical experience doing that.

If you can use wireless links, you could use hi-gain antennas and link with a wireless access point and a wireless bridge.
