Router Issues
well i have the linksys WRT WRT54GS
for some reason now when i turn my internet and router on, i have to keep going into my linksys set up and releasing and renewing the ip to get a net connection. when i login and go to status and it comes up with all the ip's, subnet mask etc etc it says in the ip box 192.168.1.100 when i click release ip then renew ip it comes up with my broadband ip of 81.109.228.* getting kinda annoying now, we was given a new modem recently by virgin media because the old one packed up on us. the engineer brought round a new modem plugged it in, worked fine i restarted my computer no internet, contacted virgin customer service they told me to reset my router etc. so i did that got a net connection but there should be no reason to keep going into your router and releasing and renewing an ip address. im getting fed up of virgin media lately, i pay for the XL package because misses insists on her crap on the box so if it was up to me id go for the Small package but this is a pain in the a** also browsing the net is really really slow, my pings are fine im pinging at 16ms and getting a download speed of 19.9mb and upload of 821 kbps but dunno why browsing is so slow any help please thanks seems like the modems conflicting with the router

Just a little confused about when I turn my Internet and router on as these are things that normally stay on even while PC is off unless connection type is PPPOE dialup or what have you. Please also post additional info such as ISP,Connection type, other PC on network or not etc. etc.

well our internet and router is turned off wheni turn the pc off by the switch on the wall as they are both on the same extension lead. THE ONLY TIME THE ROUTER AND MODEM ARE LEFT ON IS WHEN THE KIDS ARE ON THERE COMPUTERS, OTHER THAN THAT I TURN IT OFF BY THE MAINS. well when i turn the pc on my router and modem come on with it, now with the old modem soon as i load up internet explorer the webpage would come up straight away, now i get the page you requested cannot be displayed, diagnose connection issues. now this is what i get in my router setup when i check the status of it when i cannot get a connection to the internet irmware Version: v1.50.6, Feb. 17, 2006 Current Time: Wed, 29 Feb 2009 14:57:01 MAC Address: 00:18:F8:4C:78:C0 Router Name: WRT54GS Host Name: Domain Name: Internet Configuration Type Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP IP Address: 192.168.1.100 Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0 Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0 DNS 1: 0.0.0.0 DNS 2: 0.0.0.0 DNS 3: MTU: 1500 WHEN I RELEASE THE IP AND RENEW THE IP THIS IS WHAT I GET irmware Version: v1.50.6, Feb. 17, 2006 Current Time: Wed, 29 Feb 2009 18:57:01 MAC Address: 00:18:F8:4C:78:C0 Router Name: WRT54GS Host Name: Domain Name: Internet Configuration Type Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP IP Address: 81.109.224.50 Subnet Mask: 255.255.252.0 Default Gateway: 81.109.224.1 DNS 1: 194.168.4.100 DNS 2: 194.168.8.100 DNS 3: MTU: 1500 THEN ONCE IVE RELEASED AND RENEWED I CAN BROWSE THE WEB BUTS ITS REALLY SLOW BUT SPEEDS ARE FINE ON MYLINE. on my network i have my wife, and my 2 kids on there browsing is the same on each pc, each computer is connected to the router via cabled, wireless is disabled. ISP: Virgin Media Connection Type: Cable 20mb Fibre Optic Modem: Virgin Media Cable Modem Number of Computers On Network: 4 (WIRED) hope this helps abit more lol sorry about the previous post :S |

Re: Router Issues
O.K. what type of connection does your ISP provide you with?
ie:DSL, using static IP, DSL using D.H.C.P. broadband PPPOE connection requiring username and password. |

Re: Router Issues
Assuming you have your router setup to use the static IP your ISP has given you lets now see if we can eliminate the router as the culprit simply by having you bypass the router and connect a computer of your choice directly to the cable modem and see if this resolves our issue if not we can check into other possibilities.
Let me know once you were able to connect directly to the modem. Hope this helps!!! |

Re: Router Issues
You have the modem plugged into one of the LAN ports and not the correct WAN port.
When the computer is completely booted, let's see this. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output! In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG /ALL PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING <dns_servers> PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Router Issues
What could be happening is when you power up both your modem, and router at the same time your router isn't receiving a IP from the modem. Some things I would suggest are:
Keep your modem and router on all the time, just shut down your computer. If you still power down the modem and router for the night, before you power them up unplug the power connector on the back of the router, wait about a minute for the modem to fully boot up and get a WAN connection, then plug in the router power cord. Unless the modem and router are combined disregard the second suggestion. |

Re: Router Issues
It appears your primary DNS server is not responding. Perhaps you have ISP issues, since that appears to be an ISP address.
Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Re: Router Issues
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.
The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like: If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different! and your IP will be disguised. Copy/paste that link here. Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run. DSLReports Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.
