I am continuously getting this message "a network cable has been unpluggled", and I am getting the signal that I have the connection, then lost it again after 2 seconds. I am in a network at home and only my laptop has this problem. I a, using XP. When I use the wireless connection it works fine, but with the cable I continuously have this problem. Thanks for your help.

Try a new port on the router and a new cable first.

Thank you for your answer. But I tried another cable which work with my other desktops, same thing. Other machines work fine, so I do not think that the problem is the router.

Well, it could be a single port on the router, which is why I suggest testing another port. You can simply swap the cable connection there with one that you know is working. Takes 10 seconds and eliminates one potential source of the problem.
