lan drivers work but not work...[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Hi, I recently re-installed windows xp on my dell dimension 4600. I went and got all the newest drivers from their site, and everything works, except despite the fact I have installed the lan drivers and they seem to be working, the internet is very slow, or does not work at all. I can go to google maybe and do a search but it normally times out and says it can't display pages.

In my control panel>network connections it lists no internet connection gateway, but shows the local area connection working fine, the dns numbers are the same as the other computers on the network (entered correctly) and the gateway is entered like the other computers as 192.168.1.1

Since it has no gateway icon in the control panel>network connections, i thought this might have something to do with it, but i'm not sure how to put one on.

Thanks,
Paige

Paige,

Right-click your LAN connection in control panel>network connections and select Properties, from here, scroll down the 'This Connection Uses The Following Items' window and double-click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'.

You can amend Gateway's and IP's in here..

Re: lan drivers work but not work...

i tried to manually enter all of the things (ip address, gateway/dns), and it worked exactly the same as before. i can open some reliable fast sites, like google, and sometimes click links from there, but i mostly get timed out, and can't do much...

Definatly on a cabled LAN connection and no wireless?

Have you tried power-cycling your Router / Cable Modem to release stuck packets?

Have you got admin rights to administer your router?

Re: lan drivers work but not work...

Yes, I have tried several different power-cycling attempts, and I have the rights to the router. It is definitely on lan, and not wireless. I have ensured the lan cable is plugged in properly to each port, and again, I have another lan computer on the network, that works just fine. My network connection is configured completely correct, and like I said before I am even connecting to the internet, but not very well at all. I thought this might have something to do with the fact it doesn't show an "internet connection" in the "internet gateway" part of my control panel>network connections. I can't figure this one out!

Re: lan drivers work but not work...

also... I have tried another ethernet cable, (the one connected to the computer that works on the network). I have tried reinstalling the drivers, and same results. I tried doing all the other simple stuff like repairing the network connection.

Re: lan drivers work but not work...

I tried 192.168.1.1 to connect to the router, and put in admin/password. This also loads very slowly, and doesn't even get passed the first loading part. It just times out and the loading bar stops near the middle ..

Re: lan drivers work but not work...

Odd. As the PC>Router connection is direct, and you have changed your cable, I'd try another machine (Like a Laptop) to access your Router - If this goes smoothly, as one would expect, then we can narrow it down to the local machine and run some diagnostics.

Re: lan drivers work but not work...

Okay I just used my laptop with the same ethernet cable, and it is working fine. I can connect to the internet and the router perfectly with it.

Now we know for sure sure. I'd put my money on the LAN port on your PC.

I have found similar issues on tintanet', as posted below. I was looking for a diagnostic tool, and I found Plixer. Best bet would be to test your port and take it from there - However, you'd be best off talking to the HardWare Team for this one - They are the Pro's!
