Single port NIC for separate LAN & WAN connections.

Is this possible?

Win2k server equipped with a single port NIC.
Network Neighborhood shows 2 separate Network Connections:
WAN connection and LAN connection – both wired.

The WAN connection gets its IP address automatically from a D-Link router attached to a cable modem.

The LAN connection has a static IP address and identifies the server as the DNS and DHCP server for the network. The server’s internet connection is shared with the client PCs on the network.

Client PCs connect to the network via a switch. They get their IP addresses automatically from the server.

A single Cat5 cable runs from the single port NIC of the server to a switch. The switch is connected to the Router.

The WAN and LAN connections are on separate subnets.

When running ipconfig /all the LAN connection shows as Adapter #1 and the WAN connection shows as Adapter #2. The Physical Address for both connections is identical except for the last character (LAN ends with 0, WAN ends with 1).

All of this makes sense from a configuration standpoint to isolate the LAN from the outside world, but I’m thinking that 2 NICS or a DUAL PORT NIC would be needed to accomplish this. However, I'm being told that this set up has succeeded with a single port NIC.

Can this be done on Win2k server or Win2008 server? No, I can't get to the server that I am referring to in order to look at the rear ports for myself... I have to rely on the verbal info provided that says this is a single port NIC, but I just can't imagine this is correct.
