USB Data transfer

Not sure if this is the right forum. I am looking for an easy way to connect my new laptop to my home pc to sync data. I bought a USB data transfer cable and I thought that it would just plug in and both computers would just recognize each other as extra hard drives. no luck. I could buy a hub and network them via ethernet but that seems like a lot to do when I only need it once in a while. I have no internet at home right now so that's out of the question. What is the easiest way to connect two computers to transfer large files and how do you get them to connect?

Re: USB Data transfer

You have to install the USB transfer software for the USB cable to work.

OTOH, with just a crossover Ethernet cable, you can connect them.

Configure the machines as follows.

PC #1:
IP address: 192.168.9.1
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

PC #2:
IP address: 192.168.9.2
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

Leave the Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses blank.

Make sure any firewalls are configured to put the 192.168.9.x subnet in the trusted zone.

Finally, you'll have to enable fine/print sharing on the machines and actually share one or more folders or drives.

Here's a page that describes the process in detail: http://www.howtodothings.com/compute...2-pcs-directly

Re: USB Data transfer

You need the specific USB software that comes with the USB transfer cable.

Do NOT connect a plain USB cable between two USB ports, that will not work and will likely smoke at least one of the ports!

Re: USB Data transfer

To the description, the best way seems to connect with Ethernet cable, this Ethernet cable is different with which you used to connect the internet. Otherwise, you may try the free backup software, see the tutorial http://www.todo-backup.com/backup-re...nsfer-data.htm
