NIC card and BIOS setting
I have a computer with an Asus P4P800 motherboard, which has an integrated network interface. If I put a NIC into one of the PCI slots will this be recognized automatically? There does not seem to be any provision in the BIOS for recognizing an external NIC rather than the integrated network interface.

Yep, you can disable the integrated NIC in the BIOS if you desire. The PCI NIC will be found automatically, however you will have to load it's drivers.
