Cat 5e vs. VGA

I have a customer that wants to have a PC in one room and have a monitor in another room. It'll probably be a good 50 feet or so as just a guess. They are wanting to just run a VGA cable but I wanted to know first of all, what the longest run for VGA is without losing quality. I have read anywhere from 50-100 ft.

Also, I don't know too much about cabling so why can Cat 5e cables run longer than VGA without interference? What is the difference between the two?

Re: Cat 5e vs. VGA

You need a video repeater, running a VGA or CAT5 cable won't do this trick. Try something like this: http://www.pcstockpile.com/product_i...ducts_id=18517

Re: Cat 5e vs. VGA

How come this won't work? Is the length the problem? If so, what is the longest length?

Re: Cat 5e vs. VGA

I don't know offhand what the longest length cable that's practical for VGA, but I do know that I've tried VGA extension cables to run them around 30 feet and the quality degradation was noticeable. Since that device is pretty cheap, I'm not sure what your issue is.

Re: Cat 5e vs. VGA

Generally speaking with a good VGA cable you can run a resolution of
800 x 600 at 100 feet, 1024 x 768 at 50 feet. A lot depends on the cable, the video card, etc.

Re: Cat 5e vs. VGA

Like you say, a lot depends on the quality of the cable. For certain results, it's best to simply do it with a repeater.
