Cat5 cable split help
Hi:
I have only one cat5 cable running in my house to every room but I want to have my modem and router to run from a central location so I can have internet access in every room of the house. If I set the router at the patch box in the basement all the room will have internet access but not phone access. My question is simple: Can I split the CAT5 cable to get Data and Phone service to every room (If this works I will have to buy duplex outlets in every room.) If this works are the phone service or internet service get low quality? Thanks for your help |

Re: Cat5 cable split help
Personally, I wouldn't recommend splitting the cable and running phone service on the same cable. One issue here is if you make a mistake wiring and get the phone service connected to the Ethernet connection, you'll quickly find out that Ethernet equipment doesn't take to phone line voltages and currents!

Re: Cat5 cable split help
I also agree that you should not try splitting the cable,as it will only create more problems than it solves.
You may want to consider getting internet phone access and going that route in the rooms where you need phone and internet. Keep you analog line for the rooms that don't need internet, like the kitchen. This will also insure you have phone service in case of power outage or loss of internet connection. Hope this helps, Good luck, |
