Hi
I was using computer during a thunder storm, a crack of lightning occurred near the house causing dropped connection to net. I have 2 computer so i swapped cables and tested connection on 2nd computer. The cable worked, able to connect to net via Netgear router (BG834 v2). The net card affected is 3Com 3c918 Intergrated fast Ethernet(3c9058-tx compatible), Authentication IEEE 802 x1, running on Xp - pro - sp2. The light near where cable connects to computer ( i think it's part of ether card),, blinks on/off, not sure if did before problem! I ran a net diagnostic, reporting a failed Outlook express mail in and out internet connection to ISPN . Hope U Can Help cheers |

Re: Ethernet problem
I'd install a network card in the computer, they can be purchased for $10-$20 and should fix the issue.

Re: Ethernet problem
It sounds like your NIC was hit buy a power surge when the lighting hit near your house. Do what djaburg said and it should be fixed. I might get a new ethernet cable too, just to be on the safe side.
Cheers!
