Router Connection Problems!
Recently i was having problems with a linksys router for a few months. It would disconnect me every few hours at the most, and would make it impossible for me to continue gaming.
I then switched to a D-link DGL-4500 router that is said to be good for gaming >.> I still am having a large problem with this router as well. This one seems to disconnect me very often, making me have to run into the room with the modem to restart the router. It has been doing this for a little over a month now... quite annoying... I am using a linksys router card on my computer which is a little over 75 feet away in the next room. The computer connected to the modem is running windows xp, and the computer trying to connect has windows vista home premium. (not sure if that has something to do with it) The only things i can think of that is stopping my connection is that there may be some sort of interferrence with the signal, or the router card is bad... i would like to continue my gaming career lag free, so i am willing to try most anything... If anyone has any sort of idea as to why my router keeps disconnecting, please please please reply. sorry for the wall of text lol thanks in advance. |

Re: Router Connection Problems!
systm420,
You said the computer connected to the modem is running Windows XP. What is the type of broadband service you're using (cable or DSL)? What is the make/model of the modem? Normally, the devices would be connected as follows: Broadband Modem --> Wired/Wireless Router - > PCs (via wired or wireless) The fact that you said your XP PC is connected to your modem would deviate from the normal way of setting up a broadband internet enabled home network. Please clarify. Also, as far as the WiFI problem you're having with Vista - have you applied any updates, installed or changed any firewall or Internet Security programs? If this is a laptop, are you running on AC or battery power? Have you installed or changed anything else before you started having this problem? Reply with more info and we should be able to help. - John |

Re: Router Connection Problems!
systm420,
Do you have wireless security enabled on your router (i.e. need a passphrase or WEP key to connect)? Go to: http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window....mspx?mfr=true Scroll down to the section on this page titled "Section 7: Event logs, diagnostics logs, and wireless tracing reports". We need to enable WLAN tracing and capture WLAN activity during the period where the Wireless connection is working thru the point where it stops working. Once this data is captured in the Event logs, you can select, copy & paste this data here and hopefully we can figure out what's going wrong. Search that page for "Generating Microsoft Wireless Diagnostics Report" and follow the instructions. You need to enable wireless tracing starting when the system is connecting successfully and leave it running until it disconnects. After this, you need to open up the logs, select, copy and past the results of those logs on a reply post here. - John - John |
